Ok, so I'm quite a bit further in GR, although I have had to go back and reread some parts that I'm sure I read, but since I usually fall asleep to it sometimes my brain thinks I didn't read them. Way to go brain. But here are some of my main points:
Firstly, I like the divisions of the sections, even if I looked them up to figure them out. I didn't really notice the subdivisions, into chapters, but most of my research says lots of different things about the squares, a lot of which is pretty interesting, and everyone seems to be pretty cut and dry on the numbers. So I shall share my square knowledge first. Among the most interesting theories: the squares that divide each chapter represent the holes in a reel of film, or else engineer's graph paper (on which the book was apparently originally written), OR even that the squares represent the blocks of censored words in letters soldiers sent home, which were cut out in squares or rectangles. Neat, right? And the numbers, of course, correspond to numerology and the tarot, which I suspected and am pleased to have confirmed.
Secondly, there are so many literary references I think I'm only catching like one out of every three. So far we have - not including the quotes or the identified references - the T.S. Eliot April, the Rilkean Rocket, the Everyman, Swan Lake (ok I guess not strictly literary..but Swan Lake counts as literature, right?), the Damocles Sword, Theseus and the Minotaur, ALL the biblical references, a few Trotsky references, The Prince drinking game - Machiavelli, plus all the psychology references, PLUS all the things they say are references that I've never heard of, PLUS all the references I miss.
Actually, in reading, I feel like I kind of miss a lot until I reread, so even though I'm just past the beginning part of part three right now, I think I'm only actually at about one and a half because that's about up to where I've read twice. But the sexuality is kind of intense for me, I think this is definitely a boy's book in a lot of ways, except that I find parts of it less vulgar than others, so maybe it's just something you get used to. I don't know though, I think a magic penis is always going to appeal to a male sensibility much more than a female one.
I also really enjoy the random lists, the random poems, and the random 1940s pop culture references that show up occasionally. But I think so far my favorite scene is definitely still in those early chapters with the Banana Breakfast. Perhaps, though, another favorite lurks further in the text. Which, all told, is not so bad. So far. Ok so I kind of like it. Don't tell anyone.
